Mediation Training Goes to Mbale

The Judiciary started on a week-long Mediation training exercise targeting judicial officers, civic and religious leaders in the greater Mbale area.
The training taking place at Mt. Elgon Hotel & Spa attracted participants from Budaka, Bududa, Pallisa, Kibuku and Mbale districts.
In his opening remarks, Hon. Justice David K. Wangutusi, the head of the Commercial Court and lead facilitator for the training, said it was important to involve people in the administration of justice.
He said the training is designed to equip participants in skills and knowledge in settling disputes amicably.
Hon.Justice Wangutusi decried the low funding to the Judiciary.
"The number of cases filed in the courts is increasing, yet the number of judicial officers had not increased...the funds allocated to the Judiciary are not adequate."
Most participants expressed excitement over being included in the training saying that the skills will enable them to become better mediators in their communities.
The Judiciary was urged to train police personnel claiming they hurriedly arrest people without considering Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms in place.
The Mbale Resident Judge, Hon. Lady Justice Susan Okalany, said there is need to train advocates in Mediation so that they too can embrace it.
More than 100 people are taking part in the week-long exercise.
